About the Artist

I was an English and history major in college and worked as a copy editor, but I have been studying art since about 1986, when I began taking classes at Laguna Gloria Art School, the Daugherty Art Center, and ACC, and as a member of the Waterloo Watercolor Group, I have taken many workshops from professional watercolorists. I am inspired by Klimpt, Bonnard, and Matisse and have been painting a series of women on the red carpet or in gardens or domestic activities. I have a studio, Studio J, at 2309 Thornton Road. I work mostly in watercolor and acrylics but also sometimes collage. Knitting and crocheting and making earrings are other hobbies, and I have been selling scarves and earrings for several years.

Artist Statement

I like color and strong contrasts and values, complex detailed designs, and calligraphy. When I realized that women and their costumes are a main subject for many great painters and works of art, I adopted this as a subject for my own work. After taking a class with Karen Knutson on "painting like Klimpt" in acrylics, I started painting women in costumes using the techniques I learned in her class. I also knit scarves out of jewel-like ladder yarns and make earrings out of anodized aluminum jump rings and beads that are very light weight and easy to wear.
