About the Artist
Born and raised in El Paso Texas, Esteban Marquez is a creative residing in Austin, TX. Studying graphic design and sculpture at the University of Texas at El Paso, he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2014. By day, Esteban designs digital products with the folks at Funsize. After hours, he hustle hard on creative projects like paintings, rugs and zines. Esteban works frequently with fellow designer/artist Jacob Cummings as Warlock Wares, a collaborative art project. He’s participated in poster shows like After Hours and the Mix ’N’ Mash at the Mexic Arte.
Esteban Marquez uses humor and irony to add a playful twist to grim characters like reapers, pumpkins and ghosts. Mixing and matching references, his work introduces play to macabre subject matter. Working in a graphic style that references commercial art, Esteban uses both digital tools and traditional mediums such as ink, paint and a whole lotta tracing paper. The final product can range from quick iPad drawings to more time intensive projects like a gargoyle rug or series of spooky cowboy paintings.
