About the Artist
Hope Hummingbird is a ceramicist and street artist from Philadelphia. She started hanging blue-and-white porcelain tiles throughout the city to spread a sense of hope and community. Hope addresses current societal movements by displaying portraits of historical people whose stories of strength and resilience are still relevant today. Hope’s work has been displayed at the Philadelphia International Airport for the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment. She was a part of the LIVE NATION and Visit Philly City of Sisterly Love Campaign celebrating Women’s History Month. Hope has participated in the Mural Arts Artists in Conversation program as a guest speaker and has taught as a guest artist for the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In Austin, she has taught ceramics and has participated in community mosaics. Look for her work popping up throughout Austin.
I started installing porcelain tiles on the streets of Philadelphia to make myself feel more in control after the 2016 election. I wanted to spread some hope. These simple hummingbird tiles that represented resilience to me, evolved over time into a series of portraits. I looked to historical figures for guidance and hoped that others would find their stories inspiring.
