About the Artist

Isabel Glatthorn is a ceramic artist currently living and working in East Austin, TX. She was born in New York City in 1993 and grew up in New Canaan, Connecticut. She started making pottery regularly at age 14, and spent her summers working at various pottery studios in Connecticut and New York. She studied creative advertising and design at The University of Texas, blurring the lines between making free form pottery art, and making design focused products that are truly functional. She started Soul Matter Studio in November, 2017, and has been developing her craft and making functional and decorative ceramics for the hospitality industry and for individuals in her east side studio ever since.

Artist Statement

Making pottery for me is intrinsically in service of others- my goal is to make things that bring lovely, soul-soothing moments into the every day necessity of using functional objects. I gravitate towards colors, forms and textures that evoke serenity and simplicity. I look to those spaces and moments in life that provide calm, peace, non constrictive and unburdened presence for inspiration. Usually, for me, those moments happen outside. I make my own glazes from recipes handed down between potters from around the world- and then I workshop them to yielding my own unique collection of handmade glazes. I enjoy the texture and colors of glazed surfaces so much, I like to keep it simple and let the glaze and the forms speak for themselves. It’s a combination of years of practice throwing pots on the wheel, and the simple, yet complex surfaces I can create with glaze and my electric kiln.
