Artist Statement

These recent works are from a series, Current Paintings (started in 2014). I begin these by crumpling, compressing, and flattening large sheets of heavy weight archival paper. I fix these to canvases and work on the resulting textured surface. The complexity of the surfaces and the layering of gestural and atmospheric colors reflects an accumulation of time and attention along with aspects of natural structures. Though abstract, these works are based on close observation. They engage the interplay of stillness and movement. They also examine how the variety of details, all the differences, create and reflect complex wholeness. In my work I try to make visible the sensations and experiences of ephemeral awareness grounded in material explorations.
