About the Artist
Kalia Aquino (b.1999), is a self taught artist currently based in Austin. Raised in an atheist household, Aquino brings oil paint to the intersection of theology and self portraiture. Creating often colorful as well as powerful works reflecting her sense of inner divinity. When the artist isn't painting, she's a guard at the Blanton Museum of Art.
My practice takes place at the intersection of self portraiture and theology. I use biblical narrative and figuration in my paintings, leading to something I constantly questioned growing up in an atheist home, God. Although my works are for the most part seemingly autobiographical, they also serve my ideology that the closer you get to yourself the closer you get to the divine. I hope that with my work it is seen that through the unification of religion and culture, we as a collective can come to the realization that we are all one, that's the divine one, and nothing separates us but ourselves.
