About the Artist

Maria became an artist only after a devastating fire. She gave up her executive position, sought early retirement and began to create art. Being self taught, she began to hone her craft with just-in-time development for her new projects which featured wire and glass in addition to found objects. She had her first solo exhibit at La Peña in Austin in 2013. She also had a three month exhibition at Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center. She has been represented by the Lost Pines Art Center in Bastrop, Art on 12 in Wimberly, and The Arts Connection in La Grange. Currently, she runs a small gallery in downtown Bastrop and shares studio space at Canopy in Austin.

Artist Statement

I look for moments in time which are experienced commonly by people. An expression, a body movement that catches my eye is substance for my art. Generally, I focus on the female figure and its movements as seen through the eyes of another woman. I find that steel wire, glass, and found objects are the materials that best tell my stories. Line, shape and space are the most intriguing elements of art for me. Combining media and these elements of art provides an exhaustive source for communicating through art.
