About the Artist

Monica Bushong is a Tejana with grapheme-color and special-sequence synesthesia, born and raised in Austin, Texas. She studied Art History and Religious Studies at Rhodes College in Memphis, TN where she held an artist residency before returning to Austin to create and curate within the ContraCommon Artist Collective. Her work centers around mixed identity, fractured reality, ancestral memory, mental health, and community. MB's career as a visual artist includes large scale installations and public murals, as well as a global art project through her MINDSOUP shapes called "blops" - unique, handmade holographic stickers that inspire joy and can be found on phone cases and street corners all over the world!

Artist Statement

Art is my religion, a sacred space for healing, for celebrating solitude and community. I create through a process of alchemy, turning heavy stories and experiences into shapes that inspire whimsy and joy. I want my work to reward curious minds and help folks feel seen, for all their complexities and all their simple truths, so I use materials that change color and play with light. My art is called my MINDSOUP , it swirls and sloshes around in my head until I let it spill out onto walls, into notebooks, across staircases, garments, adorning devices. The shapes I produce are prayers and meditations, spells and incantations; they're the stories of others that I have collected, retold to you like a Rorschach tests, or shown only as a shimmering aura of the person who once shared their life with me. I hope you find something wonderful in the any manifestations of MINDSOUP by MB, the longer you look the more magic you'll see.
