About the Artist

Emma van den Akker is an Austin based painter, originally from the suburbs of Philadelphia. Inspired by her grandfather, a career painter, van den Akker dabbled in art before becoming serious about painting in high school. Van den Akker is self taught and uses oil paint to create expressive and colorful portraits, landscapes and seascapes. Van den Akker has been featured in Almost Real Things art magazine as one of their top 10 Artists to Watch and has exhibited her work through the Philly Art Collective in Philadelphia.

Artist Statement

Emma van den Akker draws influence from the world around her; creating still life's inspired by the Texas terrain, seascapes reminiscent of her childhood along the Atlantic ocean, and portraits critiquing the societal expectation of women. Van den Akker's portraits focus on showing her subjects in a more natural and humanistic light, untampered by the social expectations of beauty, posture, and etiquette. Her figures dance along the fine line of femininity, with saturated pinks and oranges contrasted against poignant expressions and succinct gaze. Recently van den Akker has focused on distorted realism, introducing abstract concepts into her realism portraits. Van den Akker strives to bring her work to a larger audience and further explore the relationship between women and their self-image and perceived image.
