About the Artist

Marcus Jackson is a dynamic visual artist whose original artwork has received international attention. He creates art of all sizes that is vibrant, colorful, bold and exciting. Marcus has been praised for his impressive versatility and range of artistic styles and genres. He has created and sold a wide range of artwork from portraits to abstract and conceptual pieces.

A self-taught artist, Marcus began drawing in elementary school, but after a 13-year hiatus, he re-discovered his inescapable passion & love for art in his mid- 20's. He dove back into drawing and immediately began exploring acrylics, oils, pastels, chalk, & wood working.

A 2011 mural inside Carlos Santana's downtown Austin restaurant ("Maria Maria") sparked international attention & requests for Marcus' artwork. Marcus has exhibited in shows and galleries in California, Texas, Florida & Mexico. Locally, his work has been shown at places like Mexic-Arte Museum, Zach Theater, Round Rock Arts Gallery, Cherry Cola Dog, and Big Medium Gallery (Black Art Matters Show).

Marcus works primarily with acrylics and oils, custom creates his frames, and stretches his canvases by hand. Today, his artwork hangs in homes, companies, restaurants, theaters, churches, and other venues across North America.

As a child, I remember lying on my stomach on the floor of our apartment, listening to my mother's Stevie Wonder albums and tapes... drawing pictures from magazines on lined notebook paper... with number 2 pencils. That's where the wonderful journey began.

Drawing took a back seat to other things in middle school, and by the time I was in high school, I had put the pencils down. It wasn't until graduate school (13 years later) that the creative wave hit me again - and this time, it was like a tidal wave! I picked up the pencils, did 2 drawings, and immediately dove into colored pencils. Within a month, I had made over 60 drawings and was already venturing into painting with acrylics. After I painted that first acrylic piece, I saw the artistic universe open right before my eyes... and I was hooked, forever!

As an artist, I sincerely believe in the poignant words of Henry Matisse: "An artist should never be a prisoner of himself, prisoner of style, prisoner of reputation, prisoner of success." I have adopted these words as an artistic philosophy, because I agree with that statement to the very core of my being. It's that freedom to evolve and expand as an artist, without boundaries, that provides me with endless joy and excitement about the potential creations that lie ahead.

Artistically speaking, I practice something I like to call "fearless exploration". In a world where we are so often restricted by socio-cultural norms & traditions, trapped in racial stereotypes and labels, and hindered by external standards and expectations... art gives me the space to transcend ALL of those things.

I am inspired and fueled by the infinite possibilities of art, and its potential to make a difference in the world. I will forever explore the craft, and will forever seek to bring forth that spirit of boundless creativity.
