About the Artist

I am a North Carolina-born painter, photographer, and mixed media artist currently based in Austin, Texas. I spent my first career as a Critical Care Registered Nurse until I set that profession aside to raise a family and, many years later, return to school to pursue my first love, painting. Since graduating with a BFA in Studio Art from The University of Texas, I have created work inspired by our modern nomadic life and the sustaining elements of food and shelter.

Artist Statement

My work revolves around the home, both material and conceptual, and the association between person and place. Home embodies more than simply the space a person occupies. It is the result of choices, both necessary and superfluous. It is where we learn and make mistakes, where we celebrate, and where we grieve. Home is an indicator - an indicator of status, of taste, of set priorities, or of hapless circumstance. It is where we choose to be or where not to be. It is tethered to you, a constant reminder of who you are and where you come from. I am interested in the spatial order and identity that orients us in space and time relative to home, however a person defines it. My work largely consists of overlapping images reduced to simpler forms, line, and color coming together to form larger worlds of changing perspectives and complexity. These often settle into dualities of binary opposites such as light and dark, sharp line meeting organic line, and known versus unknown.
