Artist Statement

Remote, distant, and somber - on male faces, these expressions represent heroism, romance, and power. Seen on a woman's face, the thousand-yard stare takes on a different meaning. Face West is a portrait series that explores the tensions between heroic archetypes and gender. By casting women in heroic roles, the portraits subvert the iconography of the mythical American West. Do their stark expressions seem out of place? How might our attitudes change if the subjects were men?
